Title: The Further Adventures of the Littlest Hobo in the Pegasus Galaxy
Characters: Lorne
Rating: Um. PG. It's the gorram Littlest Hobo.
Summary: Evan played it cool.
Notes: Tiny ficlet for mklutz for her birthday. Crack. Sequel to Travel Light.

Evan Lorne had told himself that he didn't miss the Littlest Hobo. He couldn't begrudge the guy leaving Atlantis – LH liked to work alone, and Atlantis operations were a little too regulated for him. Sure, he'd left friends behind, but a guy had to do what he thought was right, and LH always did what he thought was right.

Evan didn't miss him. Not really. And he sure as hell didn't participate in the group reminiscing that sometimes went on, or the ad-hoc game he'd silently dubbed 'I wonder where LH is now?'

So, when LH showed up on M5X-414, Evan played it cool. It didn't matter that he was tied to a stake in the middle of a wooden cell – he could still be cool about things. "Oh, hey LH," he said, when LH stuck his nose between two wooden bars. "How's the tour of the Pegasus Galaxy?" He grinned, and then as nonchalantly as possible asked, "You wouldn't know where the rest of my team is, would you? Not that I'm asking for any, um, particular reason."

Not that I want to fawn over you a little bit, he didn't add. LH probably knew anyway. LH always knew.

Outside the cage, LH wagged his tail, let his tongue loll, and then industriously started digging a hole under the cage. It took less than two minutes before he was inside the cage, face and paws caked with dirt. Less than 45 seconds later, LH had chewed through Evan's bonds, and was pawing at Evan's shoulder.

"So I'm guessing you do know where the rest of my team is." Evan reached out, ruffled LH's fur – soft, but gritty with dirt – and then pushed himself upright. With the two of them working together, it didn't take much to break through the bars. LH had even brought a P-90, leaving it by the hole.

"Let's go," Evan said, grabbing the gun and running for the treeline.

*

The thing about LH was that he made every mission so much easier. And fuzzier. He was stealthy, he could pick up a trail like no one Evan had ever met before, and he didn't need to carry a weapon. LH was a weapon.

A weapon that sometimes wanted his chest scratched. Although, never in the middle of a mission. That would be irresponsible.

"You pick up the scent?" Evan asked, crouched behind a convenient rock.

LH wagged his tail, nose pointing to Evan's left.

"Good. Go. I'll cover you." They've been lucky they hadn't encountered any of the locals yet, but somehow Evan figured it isn't really a good thing. It was probably a bad, bad sign, at least for his team.

Then again, LH didn't seem to be too stressed out yet, so maybe things weren't as bad as they seemed. LH did have a way of making sure missions – rescue or otherwise – turned out better than expected.

Even if 'better than expected' meant, 'at least we didn't die a fiery death'. The Pegasus Galaxy had really lowered Evan's expectations.

The rescue was surprisingly easy, at least in Pegasus terms. Evan wasn't sure what kind of training dogs got in Canada, but whatever it was, it was impressive. LH could be sneaky, but he could also make a great distraction, running into the open, barking, and generally wreaking havoc. Evan knew how to take advantage of that, slipping quietly to his team. They were staked out, surrounded by piles of wood that were just starting to burn.

"Major!" Parrish said, looking both worried and relieved. "I'm really sorry! I'll never make that kind of mistake again."

Evan nodded, working at the bindings and wondering how many times he'd heard that from Parrish. Once too many. All the reasons – so, so many reasons – just blurred together, forming one Parrish-shaped disaster.

It was kind of cute. And the fact that he thought that made Evan worry about yet another way the Pegasus galaxy was screwing him up.

"Hey!" Parrish shook his newly freed hands. "Is that LH?"

They all managed to slip into the treeline, leaving behind three stakes, four really nasty bites (LH preferred not to bite, but sometimes there was no choice), and general confusion. The fires – kicked by Sergeant Higgins so they spread around a little – had started burning with more intensity.

"Move," Evan said, covering his team. "LH!" he yelled. "You too, job's done!"

Still, he was surprised when LH followed them to the Stargate. "You want to come back to Atlantis?" Evan asked. "Everyone would love to see you. Dr. Weir. McKay." He leaned down. "Ronon. Ronon would love to see you."

LH's ears perked up.

Evan grinned. "Yeah. He doesn't talk about it, but I can tell he misses you. Not that he ever mentions you." Except when Ronon waxed poetic about LH's impressive survival skills. But Evan had promised not to tell anyone about that, on pain of no blowjobs for two weeks.

LH whined softly, and Evan laughed. Lowering his voice, said, "Yeah. Things are good. We're getting along really well." He looked away, suddenly feeling awkward. "I um. Never really said thanks for –"

LH pawed Evan's leg, barking once, sharply.

"Right. Yeah. Parrish. Dial up the 'gate."

Parrish nodded. "Is LH coming with us?"

Evan looked down at LH – sitting calmly, taking in the perimeter, even though it was unlikely the locals would have had the nerve to follow them. He sighed. "No. LH has his own plans."

Parrish's mouth turned down, and Evan heard sighs from the rest of his team. He knew how they felt.

The 'gate engaged. "You sure?" he asked, just to be certain.

LH wagged his tail.

Evan couldn't help it. He laughed. "Of course you're sure. Well, thanks for the rescue. Guess we'll be seeing you around." He turned and walked towards the wormhole. Just before he stepped through, he heard LH bark again, loud and joyful.

He stepped into the 'gate room grinning. Ronon was going to be pissed that he'd missed out on this mission.

End.
