08/08/2007: "Firefly Fic: Dangerous Table (Mal/Jayne, PG)"

Title: Dangerous Table
Rating: PG
Note: In celebration of the Mal/Jayne tension in Serenity (the movie, not the pilot), I wrote a tiny ficlet. Post-Serenity.
Disclaimer: Clearly I claim no ownership to the Firefly 'verse or its characters; nor am I making money from this fic writing thing.

After, Zoe ain't talking much, and Kaylee and the doctor are too wrapped up in each other to be thinkin' too much. Inara's meditating, trying to work out her plans. But Jayne, he's got words.

"You're gonna let that gorram girl fly the ship?"

Mal unbuckles his thigh holster, puts it and the gun on the table. "Girl saved you from Reavers, Jayne. And yeah, maybe I will let her fly Serenity. Sometimes."

Two of Jayne's knives land on the table. "I coulda saved my own ruttin' self from the Reavers. I was doin' fine."

"Yeah. Real fine. Just one tiny gunshot."

"It were small." Jayne carefully places two grenades on the table, followed by a gun. Another gets pulled out of his boot. Tiny little gun, Mal can't even imagine Jayne using it.

"You're carrying grenades now? We're on Serenity. Flying. In space. Grenades?"

Jayne scowls. "I got a preference. Anyways, remember last time I didn't bring some?"

Rolling, his eyes, Mal pulls out another gun, lays it flat. "This is not a combat situation, Jayne."

"Lookin' at that table, I might think different."

Yeah. It does look like one hell of a dangerous table. "Same as usual."

"It's a mistake to let her fly. We'll all end up space sick."

Mal shrugs. "Need a pilot." They're both silent for a moment. Mal doesn't know what he's going to do about Zoe. Finally, Jayne says, "It's just wrong, it being her."

Sitting down, Mal starts to pull of his boots. "Jayne, you don't run this ship."

"Maybe I should —"

"Just get your ruttin' pants off."

Jayne smirks down at him, but starts working on the buttons. "Guess I ain't tossed aside by 'Nara after all."

Mal scowls, "Not yet."

Jayne's still smirking. Gorram it.
